Tony Corkett, CEO of Cloud21, starts a two year term with the HIMSS Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Security Committee this month.

The committee has been set up to guide the implementation of strategic initiatives that promote the privacy and security of healthcare information and management systems.

Corkett will be working alongside, Chris Shawn, healthcare security architect, US Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Theofanis Fotis, principal lecturer, school of health sciences at the University of Brighton and Michael Mcneil, global product security & services officer at Royal Philips, as well as many other esteemed colleagues.

Corkett, said: "As we increase the use of tech across health and social care we increase the number of cyberthreats posed against us. Firstly, from what I’ve seen across the NHS, there’s a culture change required around these threats.

"Secondly, risk management requires more manpower than we have available. Navigating these circumstances won’t be easy for already stretched teams so the HIMSS committee is going to play an important role in supporting our health and social care systems."

HIMSS, a non–profit organisation, is a global advisor and thought leader supporting the transformation of health through information and technology. Their global network of health IT professionals offers expertise in health innovation, public policy, workforce development, research and analytics to global leaders, stakeholders and influencers on best practices in health information and technology.

Corkett, former radiographer turned NHS CIO, is currently studying for his doctorate focusing on application of AI in a security alerting platform. He spent two years as strategic partnerships lead at Google Deepmind where he worked globally with governments and major health institutions developing the future of AI for health. He has a keen interest in the development of AI within healthcare.

Corkett continues, "Cybercrime is the fastest growing industry in the world and there is no silver bullet. Healthcare suffers the most security incidents of all the sectors and it’s no surprise given the complex nature of the IT estates and the challenges to protect them."

The group will meet monthly to review and discuss relevant current issues and topics to provide advice to the HIMSS community.
